Out Reach Education
The hospice education department recognises that we have an important responsibility to share the expertise we have in Ardgowan Hospice with professional colleagues elsewhere in the Inverclyde area and beyond. To this end, we provide a programme of “outreach events”, intended primarily for health care professionals working in non-hospice settings, which attracts up to 300 people per year.
Our initiatives include “Lunchtime Lecture Series” which runs one Thursday per month between September and June. Lectures take place at the ACCESS building and are given by a variety of invited speakers. Recent topics have ranged from “The new Symptom Control Guidelines” to “Palliative Care in Blantyre, Malawi”.
Also popular are two short courses providing an overview of the theory and practice of palliative care - “An Introduction to Palliative Care” and “Palliative Care for Care Assistants”. These cover topics such as Pain and Symptom Management, Communication Skills.
The education service also provides tailor-made sessions on topics as varied as pain management, ethics and bereavement.
