Lymphodema Clinic

Ardgowan Hospice accepts referrals for patient with diminished lymphatic drainage secondary to cancer or cancer treatments. Patients within this group commonly present with swelling close to the site of surgery or radiotherapy.

Current waiting times for new referrals is approximately one month but palliative patients can be seen out with normal waiting time, within two weeks. The lymphoedema specialist and consultant normally see new referrals on a Thursday afternoon.

The Service offered by the hospice has greatly expanded over the years offering up to date comprehensive treatments. The clinic operates four days a week 9am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

There are two phases of treatment intensive and maintenance both follow the same four principles, which are; skin care, exercise, massage and compression. The type of treatment offered depends upon where the swelling is and the amount of swelling.

Lymphoedema although a chronic condition, can be effectively managed with the appropriate treatment.
